A cake smash photoshoot is a fun and playful session typically held to mark a baby’s first birthday. Your little one gets to enjoy (and sometimes smash!) a cake, while we capture all the adorable moments. As a cake smash photographer based near Newbury, I specialise in making this milestone a memorable experience for both baby and parents.
It’s best to book your cake smash session when your baby is nearing their first birthday. I recommend scheduling at 11 months, so the photos are ready to be shared at birthday parties or on invitations.
I provide all outfits and props. For the cake smash, simple yet cute outfits work best. You might choose a themed look or opt for something comfortable like a diaper cover or romper. Be sure to bring a spare change of clothes for after the session, as EVERYONE can get messy!
I provide everything for you, so you just turn up with a changing bag, drinks and snacks, plus a change of clothes for all! I can provide either a giant cupcake or naked iced cake, with icing in a pastel colour of your choice. My style is to keep everything understated, so the focus is on your baby, not distracting decorations.
Cake smash sessions generally last around an hour, allowing plenty of time for some classic portraits first, then allowing your little one to explore the cake at their own pace. We’ll also capture some "splash" portraits in a little vintage style bathtub, so you take home a clean baby!
Yes, I love incorporating family members into the session! Whether it’s siblings, parents, or both, including loved ones in a few shots makes the experience even more special and creates lasting memories.
Every baby reacts differently to the cake, and that’s perfectly fine. Whether they dive right in or are more cautious, I’ll capture all the cute expressions and interactions. The photoshoot is meant to be fun, no matter how your baby approaches the cake.
Make sure your baby is well-rested and happy before the session. It also helps to introduce them to cake beforehand so they aren’t surprised by the texture or taste. Bring along any favourite toys or comfort items to help them feel at ease.
Once the session is over, I will personally edit your images. You can expect to receive them around 1 week after your shoot. You'll then be invited to your viewing session, where you can choose from one of my packages, plus add on any framed prints, albums and more. I offer a very popular Gift Registry, where family and friends can contribute to the cost of the shoot, package and products - a great idea for a first birthday present for you and your baby!
