What to Wear for a Christmas Photoshoot - A Simple Guide for Families

Christmas photos are a lovely way to capture your family together, but deciding what everyone should wear can sometimes feel like the most stressful part of the whole experience.

Should you all wear matching Christmas jumpers? Is red too much? Will the children look better in something festive or something more neutral?

The good news is that you don't need to buy a whole new wardrobe or dress everyone in matching outfits to get beautiful Christmas photographs.

For my 2026 Christmas mini sessions in Hampshire, I've created a simple, natural set with soft, neutral colours and a light, airy feel. It's deliberately understated, allowing your family and their personalities to take centre stage.

Here are my tips for choosing outfits that will look lovely in your Christmas photographs, without making the whole process unnecessarily complicated.

Choose Colours That Work Together, Rather Than Match

One of the easiest ways to make family photographs look beautifully coordinated is to choose a small selection of colours that complement one another.

You don't need everyone wearing exactly the same colour. In fact, a little variation usually looks much more natural.

For Christmas photographs, some of my favourite colours include:

  • Cream, ivory and oatmeal
  • Warm beige, camel and soft brown
  • Forest green and sage
  • Burgundy and muted red
  • Soft grey and dusty blue

Try choosing two or three colours and spreading them across everyone's outfits.

For example, Mum might wear a cream knitted dress, Dad a soft brown jumper and the children a combination of forest green and oatmeal.

The result is coordinated without looking overly planned.

Let Your Outfits Bring the Christmas Colour

My Christmas photography set this year is intentionally minimalist, with a light, airy living room feel, natural textures and a little vintage-style sleigh.

Rather than filling the background with bright decorations, I've kept things simple so the photographs won't look dated in a few years.

This also means you can decide just how festive you'd like your photographs to feel.

If you love traditional Christmas colours, a burgundy dress or forest green jumper will look beautiful against the neutral backdrop.

If you prefer something more understated, creams, beiges and soft earthy tones will work equally well.

You can even mix the two. A little festive colour alongside neutral outfits can be particularly effective.

There's no need to dress everyone in red to make it look like Christmas.

Texture Makes All the Difference

When you're working with a simple backdrop, different textures can add warmth and interest to your photographs.

Chunky knits, soft cotton, linen, corduroy and delicate lace all photograph beautifully.

A knitted cardigan on a toddler, a soft jumper on Dad or a flowing dress on Mum can create a lovely combination of textures without distracting from the people in the photograph.

I'd generally avoid very shiny fabrics or anything covered in sequins, particularly if you're hoping for a natural, timeless look.

The aim is to create photographs that you'll still love displaying long after the Christmas decorations have been packed away.

What Should Children Wear for Christmas Photos?

Above everything else, choose clothes your children feel comfortable wearing.

A beautiful outfit isn't much use if your toddler spends the entire session trying to pull it off.

Soft knitted dresses, dungarees, cotton shirts, simple jumpers and comfortable trousers are all lovely options.

For babies, knitted rompers, simple dresses or soft two-piece outfits work particularly well.

If you're bringing siblings, their outfits don't need to match, but choosing complementary colours will help everything come together.

And if your little one has a favourite Christmas jumper that they absolutely insist on wearing? Bring it along. We can always see what works.

Should We Wear Shoes?

Shoes are worth thinking about, particularly for younger children who may be sitting on the floor or using the little sleigh.

Simple shoes or boots in neutral colours can look lovely, but bare feet can also work beautifully for younger children, depending on their outfits.

I'd avoid brightly coloured trainers, large logos or anything that draws attention away from your child's face.

And don't forget to check socks. Bright cartoon socks have a remarkable ability to appear in photographs when you least expect them.

What Should We Avoid Wearing?

There aren't many hard rules, but a few things are worth avoiding if you'd like natural, timeless Christmas photographs.

Large logos and slogans: These can distract from faces and quickly date an image.

Very busy patterns: Lots of different patterns competing in one photograph can make the overall image feel cluttered.

Neon or very bright colours: These can reflect onto skin and look out of place against a soft, neutral set.

Uncomfortable clothing: If something is itchy, too tight or difficult to move in, it probably isn't the best choice for a family photoshoot.

Everyone dressed identically: Matching outfits can be fun, but complementary colours often give a more relaxed and natural result.

Most importantly, choose clothes that feel like you. There's no need to turn your family into somebody else's Pinterest board.

A Few Tips Before Your Christmas Photoshoot

Once you've chosen your outfits, there are a few simple things you can do to make the day easier.

Lay everything out together beforehand so you can check how the colours work.

Try clothes on the children a few days in advance, particularly if you've bought something new.

Make sure outfits are clean, comfortable and ready the night before.

And if you're bringing babies or toddlers, consider travelling in everyday clothes and changing them when you arrive, especially if they're likely to have a snack on the journey.

My Christmas mini sessions are short, so arriving ready and on time helps us make the most of every minute.

Above all, please don't worry about everyone behaving perfectly. Children are children, and some of the loveliest photographs come from their natural expressions and personalities.
