At H Jones Photography, I create relaxed and joyful cake smash photography sessions in my beautiful garden studio in Anna Valley, near Andover. Everything is designed to be simple and stress-free for parents, with outfits, props, decorations, cake and even a warm bubble bath provided.

What Happens During a Cake Smash Photoshoot?

Cake smash sessions are carefully planned to create a gallery full of variety.

We begin with some classic portraits before the cake appears. These images often become family favourites and capture your baby just as they are at this precious age.

Next comes the cake smash itself.
Some babies enthusiastically launch both hands into the icing. Others prefer to investigate slowly, poke a finger into the buttercream, or simply enjoy watching everyone laugh around them.

Whatever their personality, I work with your baby rather than expecting them to perform.

To finish, we end with a warm splash session in a vintage-style tub. This not only creates adorable photographs but also gives your little one a chance to clean up and enjoy some playtime.

The result is a varied gallery that captures curiosity, laughter, concentration, cheeky grins and all the little expressions you'll want to remember years from now.

When Should I Book a Cake Smash Photoshoot?

Most cake smash sessions take place when babies are around eleven months old.

This allows plenty of time to receive your images before their first birthday celebrations.

If your baby's birthday is approaching, don't worry. Sessions can often be arranged at short notice, subject to availability.

I recommend booking several weeks in advance whenever possible to secure your preferred date.

Your questions answered

A cake smash photoshoot is a special way to celebrate your little one’s first birthday. The session captures fun, candid moments of your baby as they interact with a cake, often resulting in delightful and messy photos. As a cake smash photographer based just outside Andover, I’ll ensure these moments are preserved beautifully, just for you!

The best time to schedule your cake smash session is when your baby is 11 months old, so you have the beautifully edited photos back in time to show off on baby’s first birthday.

I provide absolutely everything for you - outfits, props and the cake! All you need to bring is a well rested baby, their changing bag, milk/water and snacks that are not too messy! You will get messy too, so consider a change of clothes for yourself.

I can provide a giant cupcake or naked iced cake at no additional cost. You just need to choose the style and colour of icing. My advice is to keep it really simple, so all the focus is on your baby and not distracting decorations.

A typical cake smash session lasts around 1 hour. This gives us plenty of time for some classic portraits before the cake smash sessions, followed by a splash in a tin bathtub, complete with bubbles.

Not all babies like to smash the cake, and that’s perfectly fine! Whether your little one smashes it or just pokes at it, I will capture their natural reactions. Every moment is special, and we’ll make sure to get beautiful photos regardless.

After the shoot, I will professionally edit your photos to create a gallery of 20 images. I'll the invite you back to my studio for your viewing session, where you can choose from one of my packages and any additional products. Visit my pricing page for details.

Yes! Many families like to include siblings or parents in a few of the photos, either before or after the cake smash. This adds a lovely personal touch to the session and creates lasting memories for everyone involved.
